Waldorf Music has announced the Iridium Desktop MK2, the next evolution of its acclaimed Iridium synthesizer. Building on the powerful multi-engine architecture of the Quantum and Iridium lineup, the MK2 introduces expanded processing power, new synthesis methods, and deeper sound design capabilities.
Originally released in 2020, the Iridium Desktop quickly became a favourite among artists and sound designers. Now, six years on, Waldorf is pushing its flagship desktop synth even further, delivering a more flexible and powerful creative platform.

What’s New in Iridium MK2
Key Features:
- Upgraded CPU with expanded RAM and flash storage for larger sample capacity
- New Per-Note Parameter Locks system for deep, per-note sound control
- “Seeds” synthesis engine, adding a sixth synthesis method
- New “Flavour” control for subtle timing, pitch, and timbral variations
- Expanded multi-timbral capability with up to four layers
- Advanced performance modes including round-robin and random-robin
Per-Note Parameter Locks, in Collaboration with Aphex Twin
One of the standout additions is the Per-Note Parameter Locks system, developed in collaboration with Aphex Twin. This feature allows each note, up to 128 simultaneously, to carry its own unique set of parameters.
By simply holding a note and adjusting controls, users can assign up to 16 variations per note, including oscillator modes and effect settings. The result is a highly expressive system where every note in a performance can behave differently, opening the door to complex, evolving textures.
“Seeds”: A New Approach to Synthesis
The MK2 introduces a sixth synthesis method called “Seeds,” which expands on wavetable concepts. Instead of relying on static waveforms, Seeds dynamically generate timbral movement using sub-oscillators that can be shaped through modulation techniques such as FM, ring modulation, and partial blending.
Users can explore preset timbral journeys or create their own, making this a powerful addition for experimental sound design.

Expanded Sound Design Possibilities
With increased memory, the Iridium MK2 now supports up to four simultaneous layers, doubling the previous capability. New performance modes such as round-robin and random-robin add further variation, making patches feel more organic and less repetitive.
The addition of the “Flavour” control introduces subtle micro-variations in timing, pitch, and timbre, adding movement and life to sounds without complex programming.
Looking Ahead
Waldorf has also confirmed an upcoming Version 4.0 operating system update for existing Quantum and Iridium users. This update will introduce features such as the MUTATOR patch randomizer, a new polyphonic arpeggiator, and expanded microtonal capabilities.
Pricing and Availability
The Iridium Desktop MK2 will be available through Waldorf’s global distributor network at a price of €2,399 (including German VAT).
