Pulsar Modular and producer, engineer and mixer Marc Daniel Nelson have introduced the P252 MDN Diode, a compressor plug-in based on a rare early design from Rupert Neve’s development work.

Rather than recreating another familiar studio compressor, the P252 draws on an early Germanium diode-bridge design that predates the more widely known 2254 and 2254/R compressors.

A rare piece of compressor history

The hardware behind the P252 was discovered by Marc Daniel Nelson through a former technician of Wessex Studios in London.

In 1968, Wessex acquired one of Rupert Neve’s earliest mixing consoles, along with two of these compressors. While the console eventually disappeared, the compressors remained at the studio for years and were used as part of its main tracking chain.

The original 2252 design used a Germanium diode bridge, an approach that came before the later silicon-diode design used in the better-known 2254/R. According to Pulsar Modular, this earlier circuit delivers a more aggressive character and a distinctive response to the incoming material.

Key features

  • Based on an early Rupert Neve Germanium diode-bridge compressor
  • Inspired by a rare unit used at London’s Wessex Studios
  • Captures the character of the original 2252 design
  • Focuses on dynamic response and control-driven tone
  • Developed in collaboration with Marc Daniel Nelson
  • Designed as an alternative to more familiar studio compressor types

Compression with character

The P252 is intended to offer something different from the familiar sound of compressors such as the 1176 or LA-2A. Its character comes not only from its attack and release settings, but from the way the circuit responds to the material being processed.

That makes the P252 particularly interesting as a tone-shaping compressor. Rather than simply controlling dynamics or applying the familiar “glue” effect, its early diode architecture is designed to become part of the sound.

Pulsar Modular and Marc Daniel Nelson spent almost two years developing the plug-in, with the goal of capturing the behavior and character of this unusual piece of recording history.

For engineers and producers who enjoy compressors with a strong sonic personality, the P252 offers a rather different route into diode-based compression.

Pricing and availability

The P252 MDN Diode is available now for $169.
