New Zealand independent pop artist VÏKÆ makes a powerful statement today with the release of her debut EP FINELINES, and new single #fakefriends.
An EP of empowerment and strength; with clever lyricism set against a backdrop of bold and quirky production, FINELINES includes the already-released singles Rumours, Truth and Finelines. Collectively the tracks have clocked up hundreds and thousands of streams across platforms and secured VÏKÆprime positions in the official charts, including ‘Finelines’ which debuted at #6 in the Hot 20 NZ Singles chart.
Watch the self-made video for ‘Finelines’here.
For VÏKÆ, FINELINES is a deeply personal record, which marks the end of an era and the start of a new beginning. “Coming from such a dark place two years ago, where I literally loathed my existence, to a place of empowerment is a really emotional feeling,” she explains. “This EP outlines all the struggles that I have had during my diagnoses with mental and physical illnesses, and how they have really changed my life.”
Co-written and produced with Abigail Knudson (MISSY), VÏKÆ describes their working partnership as “magical”. “I am so very privileged to have been under her mentorship for the last two years. She has taught me so many invaluable lessons about technique and songwriting. Her ability to see my vision clearly as well as adding her own nuances and flair just worked flawlessly.”
To support the release of FINELINES, VÏKÆ has also teamed up with another talented New Zealand artist, PRINS, for a nationwide tour. Playing back-to-back, the double-headline tour takes in Auckland, Christchurch, Dunedin, Wellington and Ohakune and VÏKÆ cannot wait to hit the road. Get tickets HERE. See dates and venues below.
“I’m ready to confront some cities, where I may have sinned, and sing my songs and move forward as not only an artist but a human being. Music-making is a cathartic process and it’s never really ‘finished’ (if arguably ever, but particularly) within the production and writing phase. I think there’s something really therapeutic about actually going ahead and singing these songs in public too. I just hope people resonate with it. Even if it’s just one person, that would mean the world to me!”
Born in Ukraine and seeking refuge in New Zealand post-Chernobyl, VÏKÆ is no stranger to adversity. Her music openly talks about her struggles with bipolar, addiction and poor judgement. Honest and rawVÏKÆ describes her artistry as being “brassy to purposefully make the psyche uncomfortable”. In an attempt to steer clear of coming across disingenuous, her unique “DIY” approach to making music, costuming and directing and editing her own music videos allows her to have complete autonomy of the authenticity of her artistry and music.

September 25 – Christchurch at Stranges Lane
September 26 – Dunedin at Dive Bar

|Raglan’s newest solo artist, Reiki has released his debut single, summer surf anthem, ‘Miller’. LISTEN HEREThe lifestyle of the sleepy surf town of Raglan is reflected in the music of Reiki Ruawai, (also the lead singer of Masaya) bringing his free-flowing style of surf and skate to his sound. To complement the enjoyable simplicity of the song, a clever, zero budget, one camera video was shot at a local Raglan cafe. WATCH HEREWith soulful lyrics, a voice that soars, the track flows perfectly over bass, drums creating a song that is pure vibes. The theme at the forefront of the song is a sense of relaxation, or as Reiki puts it “It’s a fresh, new style of harmonising that soothes a stress head.” Written and produced during lockdown with the help of Reiki’s dad, Brian Ruawai (Cornerstone Roots),it captures the feeling of wanting to get outside, enjoy the sun and all the moment’s summer has to offer. “Miller is about how the summer days are over and we go into our dull winter moments but can’t wait until the summer is back around.”Originally set to be an acoustic ballad, the idea was completely scrapped and kick and bass were added instead. Combined with a new generation of R&B and bass, this is a sound that is the essence of Raglan. With a lot to come from this Raglan artist, there is clearly something in the water.|

Sun’s out, the weekend is here, and Imugi 이무기 have dropped the cherry on top: their new track ‘Y U Always Acting Like A Fool?’. The electronic pop duo have teamed up with another one of Tāmaki Makaurau’s hotshot duos Church & AP, who provide some glorious bars and delightful vocals in unison with Imugi’s Yery Cho. ‘Y U Always Acting Like A Fool?’ was co-written in a hotel one afternoon, and performed for the first time that same night. Yery spoke on the collaboration process:
“This one happened so quickly. I’ve never seen a duo work so swiftly and quietly – writing it in like 30 minutes and performing it that night with that special YKK energy that blows us away every time. I love that the boys get into their feelings on this one, it shows their softer side and it’s so sweet”
This is the second single we’ve heard from their upcoming EP Dragonfruit which will be out by the end of the month, and follows up the excellent lead track ‘Somebody Else’ dropped in August. Cruise into your Friday with the latest Imugi 이무기…
