Impact Soundworks has unveiled Chro-Nyx, a new virtual synthesizer that combines the legacy of iconic instruments with modern sound design flexibility. Drawing inspiration from the legendary Roland JP-8080—along with elements from the Access Virus, Nord Modular 2, Korg Mono/Poly, and Jupiter-8—Chro-Nyx delivers both authenticity and innovation for today’s producers.

Developed over five years, Chro-Nyx faithfully captures the look, feel, and sound of the JP-8080, including its groundbreaking supersaw oscillator and full library of factory presets from both the JP-8000 and 8080 units. From there, it expands far beyond the original design, blending vintage analogue and digital character with advanced DSP and new creative tools. The result is a versatile virtual instrument suitable for genres ranging from EDM and trance to film scoring and experimental sound design.

Key features include:

  • Dual oscillators with 31 oscillator types, including faithful hardware emulations and unique models
  • Dual filters with multiple topologies, slopes, and five selectable styles (Classic, Acid, Lush, and more)
  • 18 filter drive types plus a unique BOOST mode for extreme distortion and circuit-bending effects
  • Dual LFOs ranging from ultra-slow modulation to audio-rate speeds
  • Integrated step sequencer and arpeggiator with optional trance gate
  • 16-slot modulation matrix with Eurorack-style math sources
  • Dual effects slots with 29 modules, including shimmer reverbs, choruses, and waveshapers
  • External audio input for full signal chain processing
  • Analog-modeled pre and post-FX EQs
  • Expanded vocoder inspired by the 8080, plus a 12-band resonant filterbank

Chro-Nyx was developed in partnership with Jasper Broeks (Chrono), DJ, hardcore artist, and synth designer known for his Pulsecraft instruments and performances at major festivals worldwide.

“As an EDM musician myself, I’ve been collecting both softsynths and hardware for over 20 years, which is how I know that it takes a lot for a new synth to stand out,” said Andrew Aversa, CEO of Impact Soundworks. “Having spent over 50 hours producing with Chro-Nyx, I’m in love, and I can’t wait to hear how other musicians use it.”
