Faithfully capturing the artist’s pursuit of refined studio perfection
IK Multimedia has announced the release of the Brown Sound 82/84 Signature Collection for TONEX, the third and final installment in the limited Brown Sound series. Featuring 83 meticulously crafted Tone Models, the collection includes several amp-only captures for players who prefer pairing them with their own impulse responses or a real cab on stage.
As the demand for radio-ready recordings grew in the early 1980s, the Brown Sound evolved into something tighter and more polished—yet it never lost its unmistakable character. The new collection reflects that transition, offering both authentic recreations and carefully considered variations that explore different theories about how these iconic tones were captured.

Key Features
- 1982 Tone Models – Brighter, more layered tones built around the G12-65 speaker, known for its tight lows, warm mids, and smoother highs compared to earlier Greenbacks. Recorded at Amigo Studios with refined mic placement and outboard gear, resulting in a more polished studio sound.
- 1984 Tone Models – A leap forward in tonal precision and production, recorded at a newly built Coldwater Canyon studio. Suspected Telefunken EL34s and meticulous Variac adjustments shaped the warmer, mid-forward sound, while careful amp tweaks gave each track its unique identity.
- The Amp: “The ONE” – A custom-built Marshall-style amp matching the specifications of the legendary 1968 Super Lead #12301, complete with crucial mods that capture the DNA of the early Brown Sound.
- Authentic Capture Process – Tone Models created using variations in Variac voltage, cab voicing, mic geometry, and parallel load. All models are level-matched, offered with or without parallel load, and captured raw for true period accuracy.
- Ready to Play – Crafted with era-correct gear and techniques, each Tone Model provides the recorded album tone in detail, serving as the perfect foundation for adding time-based effects inside TONEX or through external pedals.
“Brown Sound 82/84 completes the journey through one of the most influential tonal evolutions in rock history,” said an IK Multimedia product manager. “With this collection, players can experience not only the authentic tones of the era but also explore variations that reflect the different approaches to achieving them.”
