IK Multimedia has announced Sinphonica, a new family of Italian orchestral instruments created for modern composers. The first release, Sinphonica Maestosa Strings, brings a 60-piece Italian string orchestra together with a range of performance technologies designed to make virtual orchestration more expressive and intuitive.
Seven years in development, Sinphonica was recorded in Milan at the legendary Officine Meccaniche Studios. The project combines Italian orchestral musicians, detailed sampling and performance technology with a clear goal: to capture not just the sound of an orchestra, but the movement and interaction that give a live performance its character.
Rather than treating an orchestral library as a collection of samples to be programmed, IK Multimedia describes Sinphonica as a musical instrument in its own right. The emphasis is on allowing composers to shape performances as they play, from the expression of an individual note through to the positioning of an entire orchestra.

Introducing Maestosa Strings
The first chapter of the Sinphonica platform is Maestosa Strings, a complete 60-piece symphonic string orchestra comprising:
- 16 First Violins
- 14 Second Violins
- 12 Violas
- 10 Cellos
- 8 Double Basses
Recorded with a carefully selected ensemble of Italian orchestral musicians at Officine Meccaniche Studios, Maestosa Strings is designed to retain the natural interaction and movement of an ensemble rather than simply reproducing isolated notes.
The library is available both as a complete collection and as individual string sections. This gives composers the option of starting with the sections they need and expanding their collection later, with upgrade pricing available for those who eventually move to the complete package.

Sculpt Performance, Not Programming
One of Sinphonica’s central ideas is to reduce the amount of programming required to achieve a convincing orchestral performance.
The platform combines True Legato styles, Articulation Morphing, customisable articulation mapping and Dynamic Curve control with PALCO virtual stage positioning and eight microphone perspectives. Cinematic textures and integrated ensemble patches are also included, giving composers tools for everything from an initial sketch through to a finished production.
The result is intended to be a more fluid approach to virtual orchestration. Instead of constantly stopping to manage individual articulations, composers can focus more directly on how the music should actually sound and move.
That philosophy extends beyond the individual instruments. As further orchestral families are introduced, they will form part of the wider Sinphonica ecosystem, sharing the same performance approach and workflow.
