Eden – An Interview
We met up with Eden at Cafe One 2 One in Ponsonby for a chat about her music and future plans.
Eden is a nineteen-year-old songwriter from Auckland, New Zealand, described by Stan Walker and Daniel Bedingfield as a “true artist”. She first began her song writing career at age fifteen, from being sponsored by Laurie Williams Guitars, then gained success throughout high school in receiving the SmokefreeRockquest National Women’s Musicianship Award (2011) and the Play it Strange Peace Song Award (2011). Eden’s influences include Florence and the Machine, Stevie Nicks, Eva Cassidy, and Kate Bush. Her storytelling is driven by her uplifting melodies, delivered with conviction by a voice that has a glitter to it, but in moments of passion also possesses a raw bluesy feel to its timbre. The acoustic guitar is a constant in the instrumentation of her songs – keeping intimate folk singer/songwriter roots when other elements such as electronic drums, synth, and electric guitar are added.
Eden performs regularly in the New Zealand music scene – with both her six-piece band and solo with an acoustic guitar. She was the support slot for UK songwriter Nik Kershaw’s tour of NZ in November 2013, and has recently completed a national tour of New Zealand as the support act for Little Lapin. Eden has performed at venues such as The Continental Club, Austin TX, The Beehive Parliament House, Wellington, and The Auckland Museum. She will be returning to Texas in March to play at SXSW Music Festival, followed by a tour in California .
Eden’s debut EP ‘Crying Birds‘ is to be released March 1st, 2014
