Dreamtonics, the company behind Synthesizer V and Vocoflex, has officially expanded beyond vocal synthesis with the launch of Instrument X, a new platform designed to bring physically modeled acoustic instruments into modern music production and scoring workflows.
Rather than relying on traditional multi-gigabyte sample libraries, Instrument X uses neural acoustic modeling to generate instrument performances directly from MIDI and notation. The approach is designed to give composers and producers detailed control over articulation, dynamics, performance variation and spatial positioning, while keeping the software lightweight enough to run locally on a standard laptop.
Neural Acoustic Modeling for the Scoring Stage
Instrument X is built around a physics-augmented neural engine that models the relationship between an instrument and its acoustic environment.
Dreamtonics says the system was developed using measurements captured with a custom dodecahedral speaker array. This allows the technology to separate the directional characteristics of the recording environment from the dry instrument source, while maintaining phase and structural coherence across up to 11 simultaneous microphone feeds.
Users can therefore work with configurations including close microphones, Decca tree arrays and room ambience, without requiring a dedicated GPU or an internet connection.
Key features include:
- Unified Articulation Editor: Switch between automated Smart Articulation and detailed per-note control. Articulations can also be stacked on individual notes, allowing combinations that would be difficult to achieve with conventional sample libraries.
- Dynamics Lane: Automatically generates context-sensitive dynamics based on pitch, note duration and musical flow, while allowing users to manually reshape the performance. Changes affect the modeled timbre and physical response rather than simply adjusting volume.
- AI Performance Retakes: Generate alternative performances for selected phrases, with control over elements such as timbre, micro-pitch movement and kinetic intensity.
- Advanced Polyphony: Complex chords and overlapping voices can be performed within a single track without notes cutting one another off.
- Microphone Mixer Panel: Balance close spots, Decca tree and room microphone perspectives to shape the acoustic position of an instrument within the virtual scoring environment.
15 Instrument Expansions at Launch
Instrument X launches with 15 instrument expansions covering strings, woodwinds and brass.
The Orchestral Strings Collection includes Violin 1, Viola 1, Violoncello 1 and Contrabass 1, with modeled techniques including legato, tremolo, portamento, harmonics, pizzicato, col legno, sul ponticello, sul tasto and con sordino.
The Orchestral Woodwinds Collection features Flute 1, Piccolo 1, Oboe 1, Clarinet in A 1 and Bassoon 1. The instruments include modeled breath behavior, register transitions and specialized techniques such as interval trills and falls.
The Orchestral Brass Collection includes Trumpet 1, Trombone 1, Horn 1 and Tuba 1. Trumpet and Trombone also feature modeled straight, cup and harmon mutes, alongside techniques such as trills, tremolos, portamento and stopped horn notes.
Designed for Composers, Producers and Sound Designers
For composers and film scorers, one of the major attractions is the ability to work without the extensive keyswitch systems traditionally associated with orchestral sample libraries. Instrument X can automatically select articulations based on musical context while still providing detailed manual control when required.
For producers and sound designers, the system offers a different set of possibilities. Performance variations can be generated quickly, while continuous pitch and dynamics control allows acoustic instruments to be pushed into more experimental territory.
Instrument X can also be used alongside Dreamtonics’ existing products. The platform is designed to integrate with Synthesizer V Studio 2 Pro and Vocoflex, giving users a familiar workflow across the company’s software ecosystem.
Five Performance Styles
Each Instrument X expansion includes five global performance styles, intended to provide a quick way of changing the overall character of an arrangement:
- Adagio: Designed for expressive, slow-moving orchestral passages.
- Allegro: Suited to energetic and agile musical phrases.
- con Fuoco: Adds a more intense and aggressive performance character.
- Pop: Tailored towards contemporary pop and electronic production.
- Ballade: Provides a softer, more relaxed character for delicate passages.
Dreamtonics founder and CEO Kanru Hua says the company deliberately chose to make Instrument X a separate platform rather than simply adding instruments to its existing vocal products.
“Many users have often asked us to bring musical instruments into our ecosystem. We concluded that rather than overloading a single workspace, Instrument X should stand as a distinct, dedicated platform alongside Synthesizer V and Vocoflex, completing our trilogy.”
Hua also notes that although the underlying AI technology is shared conceptually with Dreamtonics’ existing work, acoustic instruments introduce significantly different challenges from vocals, particularly when it comes to their complex radiation patterns and multi-part scoring workflows.
